The weekend of February 13, 2016 was bitter cold in central Pennsylvania with temperatures well below zero. For most of the weekend however, the thermometer refused to register a reading below zero degrees, even though the fierce mountain winds easily moved temperatures into negative territory. Then, on the evening of February 13, the mercury began to drop below the zero line. The wood stove had a very difficult time keeping up with the bitter cold. Flammable chemicals within the fire wood were burning very quickly and the wood stove was filled with coals by midnight. Strategically, two of us emptied the stove so that more fuel could be added. The next morning was the coldest registered day of the weekend (Sunday February, 14) and so far for the year, as the temperature dropped to -18 degrees Fahrenheit. A frigid memory that will likely take years to thaw.
